Battery manufacturing in Europe: Why automation is not enough

Meet Alex Timmons, a forward-thinker from Mitsubishi Electric's vertical team who's turning the tide in lithium-ion battery production. With a deep dive into the world of data, Alex is uncovering new ways to optimise and innovate the battery manufacturing process.

Lithium-ion battery manufacturing is currently facing a number of unique hurdles. Expensive raw materials, delicate processes, the need for cost reduction; all the while achieving extremely high quality, precision and throughput.

In Europe, waste must be minimised to be competitive with other markets. Traditional automation approaches and methods will fall short since most machines were developed for markets where energy and labour costs are lower therefore the scrap rate of a gigafactories has less of an impact on profitability.

The key to success lies in data.

Modern production lines generate vast amounts of data, but in battery production extracting meaningful insights and actioning them in real time is crucial since tighter control of machines means better processes and ultimately a vast reduction in wasted energy, time and materials.

The most successful European cell manufacturers will need to go beyond traditional automation to stay ahead of their global competitors.

Here is my advice:

  1. Use a high speed, time sensitive, deterministic network such as CC-ink IE TSN to connect the entire plant floor and transfer data to an AI platform such as MaiLab for machine learning. This will maximise yield, quality and energy efficiency.
  2. Visibility is key – data is all but useless if you are not managing your data and turning it into insight and actions. I am continually impressed with how well the ICONICS Suite does this. It’s a real game changer.
  3. Utilise 3D simulation tools for virtual process adjustments and design trials through a digital twin. This eliminates the need for physical trials which saves time and resources whilst optimising production.

By working with expert partners who are experts in this area, you increase your chances of achieving an to implement iinnovative data-driven solutions for your business., Having the correct tools at your disposal ultimately increases the chances of you achieving LiB manufacturers will have all the tools at their disposal to achieve optimal production, a higher quality output, and cost-effectiveness.

Be brave. Look beyond the start of production. Build upon traditional automation methods . With a data-focussed mindset you will put yourself in pole position to become the global leader in lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
